Practical Tips from Grammy Award Winning Top Record Producers

Grammy Award Winning Top Record Producers give up to the minute information for Your Studio!

Most musicians have evolved into engineers by default.
They started building home studio equipment collections
relatively inexpensively and than used what worked for them.

The biggest mistakes that we are making in our recordings today
is that we are trying to do to much. If you have something that sounds good,
you can easily destroy the sound by over utilizing your plug-ins
and effects. It starts getting muddy, and you lose
the character of the tone of the instrument or sound, and soon
the whole vibe of the song is gone.

Here's what you need to remember when you are recording:

1. Spend more time doing something, and do less to it.
2. Listen more carefully, and be precise.
3. Don't keep piling Plug-ins just to do it or "try it"...especially during recording!
4. Creativity is best spent on panning and the interrelation of sounds, not as much the effects on sounds.
5. The next best way time is spent is on how to Create space with EQ ...record the full tone or instrument.
6. Do Not overcompress while recording, it will change your whole perspective on the song and your parts.

Once you learn something that works, make sure you have that process on paper or firmly imbedded in your mind.

Recording is about having a firm foundation to build on. For instruments like the drum set,
multiple mics are often used, but each one has to have its purpose
and back to the first tip, you need to Spend more time picking the right mic and
positioning the mic, than thinking about compressing or whatever.
